How much recording space do your cameras need?

Enter your cameras and how long footage must be kept. You get the terabytes needed and the disks to put in the recorder. The bitrate model is the one SecurityHub's design tool uses.

15 is plenty for most security footage; 25 or more for number plates and fast movement.
30 days is common; insurers and estates often ask for 30 to 90.

Method: each camera's bitrate is worked out from its pixels per second and a bits-per-pixel figure for the compression, the amount of movement and how busy the picture is (day 06:00–18:00, quieter at night). Only recorded video is counted: watching live does not fill the disk. Smart codecs are credited at most 30% saving. 10% of each recorder is kept free, as recorders start overwriting before the disk is full. Sizes are in the terabytes printed on the disk (1 TB = 1,000 GB). Real bitrates vary with the camera, lens, lighting and settings: the recorder's own bitrate readout after installation is the final word.
