Will your camera identify a face?
IEC 62676-4 grades a camera picture by pixels per metre at the target: Detect a person (25), Observe what they do (62.5), Recognise someone you know (125), Identify a stranger beyond doubt (250). Enter two numbers from the camera's datasheet.
On the datasheet as "FOV: horizontal". Roughly: 2.8 mm ≈ 100°, 4 mm ≈ 85°, 6 mm ≈ 55° on a common 1/2.8" sensor — use the datasheet figure.
From the camera to where people or plates will be.
| Level | Needs | What you can do | Up to |
|---|
Distances are where each level still holds across the width of the picture, with the camera level. Real results also depend on focus, lighting, compression and how steeply the camera looks down. Thermal cameras use different figures.
IEC 62676-4:2025 categories (reference)
The 2025 edition renames and re-spaces the levels. Values here follow Axis, "Pixel density based on IEC 62676-4:2025"; they are shown for reference and have not been checked against the purchased standard.
