Vumacam LPR network guides Gauteng officers to hijacked vehicle on the M1, two suspects arrested
A BOLO loaded onto Vumacam's SafeCity LPR network let Gauteng e-Government operators track a hijacked vehicle and feed real-time intelligence to officers, who recovered it on the M1.
A hijacked vehicle was recovered and two suspects arrested in Gauteng in June 2026 after the vehicle was identified through Vumacam's SafeCity Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) camera network, road-safety platform Arrive Alive reported.
A BOLO (Be On the Lookout) alert for the hijacked vehicle was loaded onto the Vumacam system for monitoring. Operators from the Gauteng Department of e-Government identified the vehicle's movements through the LPR network.
Operators shared critical intelligence - including the latest camera hit information and a reference image - with law enforcement teams on the ground.
Armed with the real-time intelligence, officers intercepted and recovered the hijacked vehicle along the M1 highway.
The recovery, publicised on 17-18 June 2026 via Arrive Alive and Accidents.co.za, is a working example of the public-private camera intelligence model now operating across Gauteng.
